New credit system coming summer 2016

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is launching a new credit reporting platform on June 27, 2016 and with it, some significant changes. Based on member feedback, CFPC has updated their reporting system – Mainpro+ - and we wanted to make sure you know how this will affect your learning on machealth.

Is the reporting cycle changing? How does this affect me?

The current reporting cycle runs the calendar year, from January 1st to December 31st. In order to align with residency program end dates, the CFPC decided to change the cycle to run from July 1st to June 30th. Transitioning to the new cycle means that anyone with a current end date of December 31st will move to June of the following year; for example, a participant with an end date of December 31, 2016, will have their cycle automatically extended to June 30, 2017.

How are credit types changing? How will they convert to the new Mainpro+ system?

Member credits will be automatically transferred from Mainpro upon launch of Mainpro+.

  • 1 Mainpro M1 credit = 1 certified credit
  • 1 Mainpro-C credit = 1 certified credit
  • 1 Mainpro M2 credit = 1 non-certified credit

A total of 250 credits per five-year cycle are required, with a minimum of 125 certified credits and a minimum of 25 credits earned and reported annually.

Can my credits carry over between cycles?

If a member has earned over 125 Mainpro M1 credits and/or Mainpro C credits, and has a total of more than 250 credits at the end of a cycle, they are able to carry over up to 40 credits into their next cycle as certified activities.

How will activities be changing in the new Mainpro+ system?

The biggest change to activities is that activity maximums will be eliminated. There will be 2 types of activities in the new Mainpro+ system:

  1. Certified activities are reviewed and meet the college standard for certified CPD. These include:
    • Certified Conferences
    • Self-Directed Learning Activities
    • Certified Group Learning Activities
  2. Non-certified activities are not formally reviewed by the college but comply with the college’s definition of CPD:
    • Reading Books, Journals, Monographs
    • Curriculum Development
    • Preparing a Paper

How is machealth preparing for Mainpro+?

In compliance with guidelines from CFPC, Mainpro+ will be applied to all of our programs once their current accreditation period expires. We’ve already begun preparing to update our learning activities, before they expire, to help you make sure you’re claiming the correct credit type. This update will be complete in July of this year.

What can I do to prepare for the new Mainpro+ system?

The CFPC recommends you do the following to prepare for the new system:

  • Report all of your outstanding credits prior to June 20th, 2016.The Mainpro credit reporting website will not be available from June 20th to 26th and will resume service as Mainpro+ on June 27th, 2016.
  • Once Mainpro+ has launched, you will still be able to report credits earned in the Mainpro-M1, Mainpro-M2, and Mainpro-C system by contacting a CFPC Mainpro coordinator.
  • Update your Internet browser. Mainpro+ will run best on the following browsers (please ensure you have the most up-to-date software version):
    • Chrome
    • Firefox
    • Internet Explorer
    • Safari
