Following the development of a respiratory service with a research arm at St Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) 40 years ago, the Firestone Regional Chest and Allergy Unit, now the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health (FIRH), has developed into a world-renowned centre for the investigation and treatment of respiratory diseases. The Institute is particularly renowned for its ground breaking research on the pathophysiology and treatment of asthma.
FIRH provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient respiratory care as the regional respiratory service for the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integrated Network (LHIN). FIRH’s patient-centred focus on care is achieved in association with allied health care professionals, nurses, respiratory therapy and pulmonary function technologists and administrative staff.
The strength of Firestone continues to be its focus on improving patient outcomes with improved diagnostic tests, patient monitoring and understanding the pathobiology of pulmonary diseases. FIRH provides exemplary clinical care, in tandem with basic and translational research, while educating and mentoring health care professionals to treat, enquire, teach and lead.
