Celebrating Quality in Family Practices, Creating a Primary Care Quality Improvement Strategy

Please visit the resources section or copy this link: http://machealth.ca/programs/quality/m/resources/1248.aspx to download the document created as a result of the Symposium on Celebrating Quality in Family Practices: Part II, held in Toronto on September 23, 2011.

This document is anchored in the results of the consultation process recently undertaken by the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP). The purpose of the process was to engage in a conversation with the public, our Members and key government and healthcare organizational leaders regarding the need to develop a “Primary Care Quality Improvement Strategy” in keeping with the “Excellent Care for All Act”. The sustainability of the healthcare system is tied explicitly to a strong primary care sector. If the primary care sector has the capacity to deliver high quality care and comprehensive services, the result will be a decreased reliance on the more expensive parts of the system. Much progress has been made to this end; however, the investments in primary care to date tended to be aimed primarily at enhancing access to care. With the passing of “The Excellent Care for All Act” last year, the focus is now squarely in the realm of enhancing the quality of care throughout the healthcare system. For that to happen what we need now is a “Primary Care Quality Improvement Strategy” to support all family practices to become high quality, high performing and innovative practices.

    Sincerely,

    Jan Kasperski
    CEO,
    Ontario College of Family Physicians
