Social Determinants of Child Mental Health

Social Determinants of Child Mental Health
An outlined approach to understanding and assessing social determinants of health by examining how children's environments affect their biology and their pathways in health.

As health-care providers, it is essential that we understand the biology of the human body and also the environmental forces that shape the biology of individuals, leading to good or ill health. Therefore the first goal of this curriculum is to outline an approach to understanding and assessing social determinants of health by examining how children's environments affect their biology and their pathways in health.

The study of social determinants of health is an important population health topic. Physicians and health care givers, though, are most often concerned with the health of individuals. This series of modules will therefore focus on how to incorporate these principles into practice:

1. "How do we ask the important questions about a child's environment that are relevant to healthy development?"

2. "How do we use our understanding of bio-psycho-social influences on development to intervene in the life of a child to prevent or treat emotional and behavioural problems?"
