Implementation of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Competence By Design initiative is happening across residency programs in Canada. This course is meant to prepare residency teachers (faculty, senior learners, and other health care professionals) at McMaster for the transition to a competency-based model of residency education.  Topics in this course include an introduction to competency-based medical education and the Competency By Design initiative; entrustable professional activities, milestones, and resident assessment; teacher as coach; direct observation and feedback; and competence committees.

Introduction to Competence by Design
After completing Introduction to Competence by Design, you will be able to:
  • Identify the rationale for the transition to the CBD initiative and key concepts of the new system
  • Recognize how to use EPAs and milestones for assessment in the new CBD system
  • Operate as a coach by providing direct observation and feedback to facilitate resident learning
  • Describe the role of observer, academic coach, and competence committees in resident learning, assessment, and progression
