Resources designed for health professionals to help with attitudinal competencies and communication skills that are essential for the care of older adults.
This podcast is based
on a USMLE question regarding an 87-year-old women hospitalized for diabetic
ketoacidosis who is refusing insulin injections. She is nearly blind and will
likely require bilateral leg amputations but she does not think her life is of much
value anymore, hence her refusal. An emphasis is placed on the role of
competence, capacity, informed consent and the importance of respecting the
wishes of the patient.
