About

This six-part program provides an overview of key concepts and skills for clinicians facing common challenges in the management of patients with chronic pain, including reducing the risks of opioids and addressing opioid use disorder.

The Opioids Clinical Primer is integrated with the suite of programs collectively described as Ontario Pain Management Resources: a partnership to help clinicians support their patients. This partnership includes Health Quality Ontario, the Centre for Effective Practice, Ontario College of Family Physicians, Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Project ECHO, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Ontario MD, and the LHINs. As partners in the provincial Opioid Strategy, each of these organizations is developing its own initiatives, while committing to referencing and supporting the others.

The Opioids Clinical Primer is a partnership of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the University of Toronto, developed with substantial input from experts in certified professional development (CPD) and subject matter experts from each of Ontario’s Medical schools. McMaster University’s Division of e-Learning Innovation (DeLI) is our partner in instructional design and development.

Under the leadership of our Steering Committee, the program has been developed to meet identified gaps in educational offerings. Each of the six brief online courses is authored by individuals with recognized clinical expertise as well as leadership in education and guideline initiatives and includes representation from across the province.
